Goals of Camp

  • Provide social and emotional support for families from other parents and parent-mentors.
  • Offer professional support from Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and more.
  • Share strategies to foster language and literacy development.
  • Have fun!

Typical Schedule

Thursday
  • Professionals arrive in the evening, anytime after 5 P.M.
  • This is a relaxing time to informally network and connect with like-minded people
  • Dinner is on your own so we recommend bringing food or eating on the way
Friday
  • Friday 9:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M.: learning opportunity for professionals
  • Families arrive around 3:00 P.M.
  • Supper is served at 5:00 P.M.
  • Friday evening - includes time to connect with families, campfire/songs, games and relax
Saturday
  • Campers are invited to participate in communication, literacy, and unstructured play and exploration with clinicians developing their AAC skills
  • At the same time, parents participate in learning experiences and have  opportunities to discuss challenges and share celebrations
  • Evening - whole group fun :)
Sunday
  • Shared reading exploration & creation of remnant books
  • Camp concludes with lunch at 12:00 P.M.

Lodging

PictureBrownell Children's Retreat: Mountain View County, AB T0M 1C0
  • The main lodge has 20 bedrooms on 2 floors and can accommodate 99 people
    • Each room sleeps approx.5 people.
    • Last year there was enough space to leave a room empty in between each other.
  • 2 Bathrooms are located on each floor with showers for both male and female occupants
    • Female bathroom on main level has a bathtub
  • 4 brand-new heated cabins available (7 people per cabin)
    • Cabins are about a stones through away from the main lodge.
    • Each cabin has two sets of bunk beds plus a separate room with a double bed. (cabin 4 is more removed than the other 3 cabins)
    • There are NO bathrooms in the cabins; you must use the main lodge


What to bring...

Location

  • Proper footwear for the weekend (running shoes, rain/snow boots) 

  • Indoor footwear, slippers (Outdoor footwear not permitted in the lodge) 
            
  • Toiletries
 including TOWELS
  • Any special snacks or beverages if needed - although all food is provided.
  • Camera 

                
  • AAC System/iPad, chargers, low tech backup            
  • BEDDING (Sleeping Bag/quilt/sheets and Pillow) 
            
  • LAPTOP (It may be nice to have that option if you want to work on yours. I will bring a USB to transfer items.)
